Factory Farms

Overview

As children, we are presented with storybook farm images, where calves nuzzle their mothers in shady fields, pigs loaf in mud holes, and chickens scratch and scramble about barnyards. The farm animals of our fantasies live easy, tranquil lives. But the grim reality of a modern Canadian animal factory stands in sharp contrast to these ideals. The sad truth is, Canadians have been fooled into accepting a standard of animal care that is a direct insult to any thinking, compassionate person.

Today, the vast majority of animals raised for food spend their entire lives indoors, in intensive confinement systems. These systems are called factory farms, and the animals in them are treated exactly like mechanical parts on an assembly line. Mass production and profit are the only concerns, goals met at the expense of the most basic of needs of the animals. In Canada each year, 650 million animals are severely confined, stressed and traumatized on their way to the dinner plate. For these animals, misery is a way of life, and the only escape is death.

Please take a moment to learn more about the factory farming industry and what you can do to help the many abused animals it exploits.
