Yuan: Featured Restaurant March 2005

Yuan – the latest vegan cuisine to hit Montreal!

Mock meat may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but if you do enjoy it and are beginning to feel like a permanent fixture at Chu Chai, Montreal's premier vegetarian restaurant, check out the novelty of TVP a la Taiwanese at Yuan on the corner of Sherbrooke and St-Denis.

Yuan offers various combos of sushi and noodles, as well as dishes of chicken or fish, cutlets - all made from soy-based textured vegetable protein. The spring rolls made with fresh ingredients and the hot and sour soup with sesame and mushroom, are a tasty way to start your meal. Tea arrives without even asking, and Yuan will turn any dish into a table d'hôte, adding soup, a plate of appetizers, rice and a spring roll.

Some other delicious options include the thick-sauced and veggie laden yellow curry with pleasing cubes of taro root. The ko-pung chicken comes with peanuts and vegetables, impressively mounded in a half pineapple. You’ll marvel at the soft-haired hedgehog mushrooms, once so expensive they were served only to kings, the server explained!

The desserts are eclectic and there’s lots more to choose from at the grocery store in the back (lots of varieties of TVP, nuts, teas, hot sauces, dried mushrooms). Don’t leave without peeking at the unique seed art featured in the spacious dining rooms.
