Blood on the Ice - Canada's Seal Slaughter

Canada's seal slaughter is the largest hunt for marine mammals anywhere on the planet.

In 2002, 312,376 seals were reported killed - at the time, the largest slaughter in 35 years - and recent studies suggest that up to 42% of them may have been skinned alive.

In February 2003, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans authorized the slaughter of more than a million seals in the next three years alone! This is the highest total allowable catch in history, and will result in the levels of killing that we witnessed in the 1950s and 60s - when the seal population was reduced by two thirds.

So far, in 2004, 321, 199 harp seals have been slaughtered off Canada's east coast.

The seals need you to act now. Please take just a few minutes to read our factsheets on the seal hunt. And then find out what you can do to end this bloody massacre.
